Don’t you just hate a case of writer’s block? I had one yesterday – and ended up with no post. Sometimes it’s like that with the pieces I create. I name them, kind of like pets. With some, the name comes instantaneously, like my “Faded up to the Sky” bowl. One look and I knew those Cat Stevens lyrics were the perfect name. With others, though, I have to live with them for a while so their true personality has a chance to shine through. Once that happens, a name is easy to come by.

You’re Invited to a Felting Party
I have been busy knitting bowls and have begun felting again. I have a dozen bowls that I haven’t even had the opportunity to photograph. What is felting exactly? Anyone who has accidentally put a wool sweater in the washer has felted. The hot water and agitation bind the fibers together tightly. I do this on purpose to my bowls so they will be able to stand up to whatever folks might want to put in them. I’ll be felting tonight and you’re invited!

Birds and Butterflies and Fish, Oh My!
Not much doing in the creation of art today. I spent a lovely day in Chattanooga with my daughter – a two hour boat ride on the River Gorge Explorer and a two and a half hour tour of the aquarium including the newer building which included penguins, a butterfly exhibit and two hyacinth macaws, among other things. Lots of color inspiration in those birds, butterflies and exotic fish. Might have to break into my stash to see what colors beg to be used.

Day One!
Inspiration comes from many places for an artist. Inspiration for this blog comes from what I call my “Summer of Food.” I began reading Julie & Julia (Julie Powell) and then moved on to The Sharper Your Knife, the Less You Cry (Kathleen Flinn). I am now one quarter of the way through Julia Child’s (with Alex Prud’homme) My Life in France. And of course, I went to Julie & Julia – the movie. Thus the inspiration to share my life as a fiber artist – and some of my art, too! If this inspires a fiber arts movie – I’m ready for my close up, Mr. De Mille.
